Why Pot Size Matters for Plant Health

Choosing the right pot size is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a plant parent. Too small and your plant becomes root-bound; too large and the excess soil retains moisture that leads to root rot. Getting it right sets your plant up for long-term success.

At Potify, we stock a wide range of premium plant pots to suit every plant size and style. Whether you're repotting a tiny succulent or a large indoor tree, we've got you covered.

General Rules for Pot Sizing

A good rule of thumb is to choose a pot that is 2–5 cm larger in diameter than your plant's current pot. This gives roots room to grow without drowning them in excess soil. For fast-growing plants, you can go up to 5 cm larger; for slow growers, stick to 2–3 cm.

According to ABC Gardening Australia, most common houseplants benefit from repotting every 1–2 years as they outgrow their containers.

Signs Your Plant Needs a Bigger Pot

  • Roots growing out of the drainage holes
  • Water runs straight through without being absorbed
  • Plant is top-heavy and tips over easily
  • Soil dries out extremely quickly after watering
  • Visible roots circling the surface of the soil

Choosing the Right Material

Pot material matters just as much as size. Here's a quick guide:

  • Terracotta: Breathable and great for succulents and cacti that prefer dry conditions
  • Ceramic: Stylish and retains moisture well — ideal for tropical plants
  • Plastic: Lightweight and affordable, good for moisture-loving plants
  • Fibreglass: Durable and lightweight, perfect for large indoor plants

Drainage is Non-Negotiable

Always choose a pot with drainage holes. Without proper drainage, water pools at the bottom and causes root rot — one of the most common causes of plant death. If you fall in love with a pot that has no drainage hole, use it as a decorative outer pot and keep your plant in a nursery pot inside.

The Royal Horticultural Society recommends always checking drainage before purchasing any container for plants.

Pot Sizing by Plant Type

Succulents & Cacti: Choose a snug fit — just 1–2 cm larger than the root ball. These plants thrive slightly root-bound.

Tropical Plants (Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos): Go 3–5 cm larger to accommodate fast root growth.

Palms: Palms prefer deep pots to accommodate their long taproots. Choose tall, narrow pots over wide, shallow ones.

Herbs: Most herbs do well in medium-sized pots (15–20 cm diameter) with excellent drainage.
